Things I Learned... Challenges I Encountered...

...creating a blog, wiki, and Twitter feed for EDU 651, Ashford University (Week 2 Assignment).

The list was made in Brainstorm Lite, which I believe is no longer available. It is a countdown timer that allows typing of lists, and stops entries at the set time.

We've been using two texts for the course:

Richardson, W. (2010). Blogs, wikis, podcasts, and other powerful Web tools for classrooms. Thousand Oaks, California: Corvin

and

West, J. & West, M. (2009). Using wikis for online collaboration: the power of the read-write web. San Francisco, California: Jossey-Bass

Both frame the Internet as access to powerful collaborative tools that can be scaled from small groups to global participation.

Key "Take-Aways"

I have had previous experiences with both blogs and wikis (click HERE for a quick overview of the blogs), however this work expanded my sense of how far-reaching blogs can be if managed accordingly.
Both blogs and wikis are capable of vibrant global conversation and collaboration, using a variety of media and focusing on almost any topic.

I gained experience connecting the tools so the blog can reference both the wiki and the Twitter feed. The continuing process will build that skill, which can be highly useful in our digital culture.

Challenges

The most significant challenge for me is generating meaningful content. I can easily report my diary/journal entries, but good insight, wisdom, and direction is very difficult to create. I'll do one of the Brainstorm Lite exercises to generate a list of topics worth considering and publishing.

It is worth noting that another (very common) challenge is keeping track of account access information. Blogger requires an email, which can also be used for PBWorks, but it may have different password. Twitter can use the email or the screen name, and may or may not have the same password. Add this to Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Ashford University, email, etc., and a significant management challenge emerges.
